THE IMPORTANCE OF PODOLOGICAL ACTION IN PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF FUNGAL INFECTIONS IN ELDERLY

Abstract
According to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), aging is defined as a sequential, individual, cumulative, irreversible, universal, non-pathological process of deterioration of a mature organism. Considering the progressive increase of the elderly population and all the functional alterations involved in the aging process, we highlight the changes arising from immune decline, such as diseases due to fungal contamination, such as onychomycosis and Tinea pedis. The fungi have opportunistic characteristics and use factors such as systemic diseases, immune deficiency and medication use, which are very common to the elderly, and eventually predispose to contamination. Diseases caused by fungus in the elderly are frequent and require appropriate treatment and guidance [6]. However, there is a lack of guidance and basic care that are essential and act both in prevention and treatment of these diseases. According to Pinto, 2018, [8], the podiatrist has an important role through the services provided by podiatry, demonstrating the importance of basic care, associated with the practice of daily hygiene. The objective of this study was to demonstrate that the correct hygiene and foot care guidance can help to prevent diseases related to fungal contamination in the elderly. This study was characterized by a literature review. A field survey was conducted through a questionnaire, approved by the Anhembi Morumbi University Ethics Committee.
